A Life Abroad

Ah, ah, ah – Is there anybody home? Who wants to have me, just to love me?

Today was a productive day…sort of.  I completed two essays!! (Although these were two essays I had already ‘finished’ and just re-read, corrected and ensured the footnotes/bibliography were complete and proper.  Don’t think I can write two essays in a day haha).  The unproductive side of my day was spending 2 hours on skype for just two phonecalls to 2.5 people and a dog, spending the last few hours at the pub watching soccer (Manchester United upsest Porto at home :O) and just generally finding ways not to do any of the other tasks on my to do list 😛

It was interesting sitting in the pub though, as 80% of the people there weren’t drinking. They had just come to watch the soccer, as it was on pay tv. However, nobody was drinking.  This annoyed the Geordie Publican no end and when a group of drinking guys(and thus paying customers) couldn’t get a seat because non-paying people were sitting in the vast amount of chairs provided he kicked in to action.  Moving swiftly around the room the question, or was it more a statement, “Do  you have a drink or are you leaving?” could be heard all around us.  It was a strange sight to see as I don’t know many people in Australia who would go to a pub and not drink.  At least one or two people in a group would be drinking or at the very least would’ve bought soft drink or similar.  But no…The Eldon, on non-international student nights, seems to be infested with free loaders.  I felt a little sorry for the publican though, he needs to sell drinks to pul a profit.  But how can he if most people aren’t buying drinks and the ones who want to can get a better seat to watch the game in a different pub.  Personally, I would’ve done exactly as he ended up doing.

One other thing I noticed today though is that I think Australia is WAY ahead of England in the “Environmentally Friendly Competition.”  I don’t know why…maybe it is because Australia actually has some beautiful environment haha jks.  Firstly, ALL fast food places except Maccas, Subway and Burger King (yes it is Burger King and not Hungry Jacks here ;)) still use styrofoam containers for burgers.  In Australia I can’t remember a time when sytrofoam was everywhere but here there seems to be a big “screw you” to the environment going on.  Then there is also the fact that every major city, whether it be Leeds, London, Manchester, Liverpool, etc seems to have a haze.  Today Leeds was very smoggy for some reason.  You don’t neccessarily notice it as you have no “clean air” to compare it to, but in Ireland there was such an unpoluted environment and I have come back and been able to pick up on it.  I am not environmental hippy…not even close, but it does seem that England has a more damaged landscape and is doing less to protect it.
